That night in the fields, the shepherds were doing what they always did—guarding their sheep, living on the outskirts of society. Their work was rough and unglamorous, often overlooked or even disrespected. But on what started out like any other night, something extraordinary happened.
An angel showed up, and the brilliance of God’s glory surrounded them. These marginalized, unnoticed men were the first to hear the greatest news of all: the Savior of the world had been born. The angel’s first words were a comforting command—“Don’t be afraid.”
I think it’s significant that God chose shepherds. They understood sacrifice deeply, raising lambs destined for temple offerings. I imagine felt the weight of the system—the cost of sin—and perhaps even the sting of being seen as unimportant more than the average person. But God chose to show His power and glory to them, right in the middle of their ordinary, messy lives.
Maybe you feel like those shepherds today. Life might feel heavy, messy, or unnoticed. Perhaps you’re navigating personal struggles—health challenges, strained relationships, financial pressures, or lingering disappointments. Maybe you wonder if anyone really sees or understands what you’re going through.
The same message given to the shepherds is for you today: Don’t be afraid. God’s power is still at work, even in the darkest, most uncertain moments. He’s not far off; He’s right here, showing up in the midst of your life, just as He did for the shepherds.
God could have sent Jesus as a mighty warrior or a powerful king. Instead, He came as a baby—vulnerable, dependent, and fully human. Jesus experienced life’s struggles—hunger, betrayal, loneliness, exhaustion—because He wanted to walk with us through our own. That’s how much He cares.
Isn’t that what we long for? To be seen, understood, and met with compassion? Jesus offers that. He came to be with us, to feel with us, and to remind us that we’re not alone.
After the angel shared the good news, a whole crowd of angels joined in, praising God with a stunning and powerful display. As powerful and impressive as this awe-inspiring moment was, with it came a gentle message of peace: “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and peace on earth.”
God’s greatness didn’t come with intimidation or force. He balanced the display of His power – what he was capable of – with compassion. He chose to earn our trust and love by gently entering our world and inviting us into relationship with Him. It’s a daily invitation for each of us. In our struggles, confusion, and waiting, His message remains: “Don’t be afraid. I am with you.”
Like the shepherds, you may not see immediate change after your time spent worshipping Him. The shepherds returned to their fields after the angel’s visit, and life likely resumed its familiar rhythms. But behind the scenes, God was at work, protecting and fulfilling His promises.
Wherever you find yourself this season—whether in a season of waiting, rebuilding, or facing unknowns—God’s message is for you. He sees your struggles and understands the weight you carry. Even when you can’t see it, He’s working.
Let’s hold onto this: God is faithful. His plans for us are good. His love is brighter than the darkest night. This Christmas, may His presence be your comfort and peace.
